Whoever Becomes Simple Again

Matthew 18:1-5:18 At about the same time, the disciples came to Jesus asking, “Who gets the highest rank in God’s kingdom?”

2-5 For an answer Jesus called over a child, whom he stood in the middle of the room, and said, “I’m telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you’re not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in. Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God’s kingdom. What’s more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it’s the same as receiving me.

As a child I remember seeing angels; and they became very dim the day my best friend and I were  playing games, and a neighbor yelled at my friend, “get your “niggar” ass off my street”; for I had not seen the colors of people before; and again the day  my District Superintendent’s face was filled with hatred, “You are fired, we do not want fags as our ministers.”

Through the years, the angels disappeared and I joined the legions of the world. From time to time they appeared  again and again, at my most vulnerable, bringing the best to the forefront.

A colleague angrily said, you are  “childlike” one day, in derision, it hurt deeply, until realzing  the qualities a child has: accepting, does not see the colors of another, sees no differences in wealth or poverty, caring without hesitation,– the qualities Jesus calls us to practice.

It is at the times of being “childlike” the most vulernerable, when  our guardian angels are visible, and guarding us on our way.

The “Angel of Death”, of which I write is a not a negative identification, but one of  recognizing her guiding in this life, reminding how death is so near, and to live the best that I can.

In the past year and a half I  have experienced many deaths first hand; friends turning away; threatening physical illness; I am learning more and more that while I live in the world, I do not belong to the world, and that living in the world without belonging is the heart of the spiritual life.

Living in our spiriual life, keeps us aware that our true house is not the house of fear, in which prejudice, hatred and violence rule, but the house of love, where God resides. It is only in loving our neighbor and of all creation,  do we find our true home! Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!
