Rejoice in the Lord!

Rejoice and Give Thanks in All Things!

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ with you.” I Thess. 5:16-18

Eli Wiesel wrote: “Our century (the 20th and 21st) is marked by displacement on the scale of continents, as has never been seen before in history because so many people have fled from tyranny, homelessness, and hunger.;” Today we have thousands on the street, ill, dying, without housing, homelessness is growing, people are losing their incomes, the rich get richer,  and people cry out to be saved from their situation.

In the midst of this one wonders what one can do, and for me I have come down to having a healthy respect for life’s inconsistencies and ambiguities and to appreciate life”s contradictions and its inevitable inconsistencies.

Hunger, economic inequality, social division, war, and pandemics will persist until we all can show hospitality, but in history that has not happened. So  rather than kicking the door, wearing myself out,  I will simply offer hospitality one on one to people. And suggest that if all of us did one by one, the hungry would  be fed, the homeless housed, and all provided for.

I will continue to treat people as equals, without judgment. And I will seek to practice the Irish Proverb: “It is in the shelter of each other that people live.”

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ with you.”
