We all seek the approval of other people...it’s a part of human nature to want to be loved and accepted for who we are. But when we’re alone with ourselves at the end of the day, the only one we have to answer to for the things we did or did not do, is God.

Punkpriest, you can't go wrong by helping others, even the rare instance when you have heart their pride. They will learn by your example and hopefully learn to accept gifts, which will also inspire them to give, bringing salvation to their hearts.

I would say God bless you, but I know my blessing is nothing compared to the glory received when saving someone.

Father Sims – I REALLY needed to read this today. I returned to the Roman Catholic Church after a 20 year absence in 2006. I visited other denominations, but they didn’t feel like “home” to me. During the past three years, I’ve been waging a kind of battle with myself because I don’t agree with church teaching on homosexuality. My brother and niece are gay and I keep asking myself, “how can I ever look them in the eye, tell them I love and support them, while belonging to a church that calls them “intrinsically disordered?’” Your post today helped me to look at my faith (and dissent) from a totally different perspective. I have felt angry and frustrated with the Catholic Church for so long, but maybe I’m the one in need of an attitude adjustment. Sometimes I get Jesus all tangled up with the institutional church and I allow other people to define our relationship for me. The Church is a huge community full of millions of wonderful, but very flawed individuals, including myself. Thank you!!

U know Kimberly i wear clericals when appropriate, for hospital visits, for church, for official business. my work on the streets i am official as well--shorts, hoodie, teeshirt. i am a priest 24/7, and i am very aware of that, but some people expect priests to look like a priest, and in their case it is sad they can not see beyond the looks, to the heart. the reality is i am a priest 24/7, and for me that is important, and i remember that. thanks for your comments, they are so appropriate and on target. river

We humans are so hung up on appearances. A man doesn’t wear clericals 24/7 so they automatically assume he’s not a priest? Why does it matter what a person puts on in the morning? At my Catholic high school, it was us girls who wore the uniforms and the nuns who taught there dressed in regular street cloths. And believe me, I NEVER forgot who they were. And just because they no longer wore the traditional habit didn’t make them “less than” in my eyes. Besides, the way I remember it, they all seemed so much more comfortable and relaxed…:)
